HellNico, you should probably learn to write in English a lot better before trying to debate on a website for English speakers (you even screwed up when trying to copy a three word sentence someone else posted). It makes you look stupid when you have so many spelling and grammar errors and it makes it hard to take anything you say seriously (as does the blatant rage). Just sayin'...

TLDR: While we should expect some Overwatch heroes in Heroes of the Storm eventually, don't be surprised if many of them are introduced as skins of other heroes.

Wow you are absolutly clueless of what a MOBA is aren't you ? You think that blizzard is done adding heroes to HotS ? Moba can have 80+ characters (DOTA 2 has more than 80, SMITE is currently at 79, league is over 120). That's actually a big point of them : characters diversity.

Even if you have 2 characters that are close in design, they actually aren't the same. And have different picks and counter picks.

TLDR : We will have overwatch heroes in HotS, and their is 0% chance that they will only be skins to existing heroes.

I'm not clueless at all... I know that there can be many characters with similar abilities to others in MOBAs. However, Blizzard has already expounded on multiple occasions the efforts they have gone through when designing heroes to avoid them being too similar to already existing ones (Sylvanas, for example doesn't summon skeletons like she did in Warcraft 3, because they already felt that there was too many summoned minions in the game already and they went out their way to make her as different from Valla and Tyrande as possible, hence why she ended up being a specialist instead of an assassin). Point is, some of them are already very similar to already existing Heroes characters and/or their abilities would not work in a MOBA setting. Therefore they would either have to have their kits altered greatly or they would just have a presence in the game cosmetically.

I understand that Heroes will have many more characters, but the ones that could be added from other games have more potential to be unique than a lot of the Overwatch heroes... By the way, my points were mostly just examples, so stop getting your panties in a bunch (But seriously, do you really think someone like Widowmaker, for instance, would bring something new to Heroes? Pretty much everything she does is already in the game in some form or another, and the same can be said of many others, as I've already pointed out). Also, speaking in definite terms about speculation of Blizzard's plans is always a mistake. Hell, they've already made multiple skins for Heroes characters that resemble a major character from the same or another franchise (Azgul'dan, Novazon, Magni Muradin, the three "altered fates" skins on the night elf heroes, etc.), so don't put it past them to do the same with Overwatch characters... As much as many people want all the different Overwatch heroes in HotS as their own characters, Blizz isn't going to throw them in just to have them there. They will only put in ones that they can make unique in some way...

    Quote from Kurze >>

I've seen the argument on the Heroes Nexus forums several times that Valla and Reaper are basically identical characters and therefore we're never likely to see him make the jump over to the Nexus. I don't buy this. I assume it comes from the fact they both dual wield and have a spin and win style ultimate. These two things alone do not make characters identical, especially in MOBAs, and there is more than enough variation out there to ensure we see Reaper as his own character in his own right and not a Valla legendary skin.

If they were to make Reaper his own character, they would have to make up at least a couple new abilities for him. Wraith Form is too similar to Dimensional Shift, Wraith Walk, and Jump. And yes, Death Blossom is practically identical to Strafe in function. At least his passive would be unique if copied over... But yeah, just look at what they had to do with the Butcher to make him different from Stitches. They completely removed his chain hook ability from D3 and made his cleaver slam a much smaller area. They even avoided making him the same role as Stitches (even though he doesn't look like he should be as squishy as he is)...

Hm... I've been posting here for a while... I guess I should do this, as well...

I'm ScorchHellfire (just Scorch in Blizz games because they only allow 12 characters in their account names nowadays >_<). I've been a pc gamer since back in the Windows 3.1 days (started out with stuff like Oregon Trail, Scorched Earth, and various old-school arcade games on 3.5 floppy A disks and the old, huge [and actually floppy] B disks). I started playing Blizzard games when my older brother got the original Warcraft battle chest (the one with Orcs and Humans, non-battle.net edition WC2, and BtDP) when I was around 9 years old (about 20 years ago). My first exposure to an fps was the original Doom around the same time. I've played many since then, including the original Unreal Tournament, 2k3, 2k4, and 3 as well as Quake 2 and 3/TA. I've been playing TF2 off and on since it went f2p and have spent a little over a thousand hours (as well as a sizable chunk of change) on it. However, I feel it's gotten kind of stale and overly inundated with cash-grab cosmetics, so Overwatch is arriving just in time. I hope that it's as awesome as it looks so that it can become my new go-to fps (and that they make a pyro-like hero to go with the soldier-like Pharah, bow sniper-esque Hanzo, and the hopefully demoknight-esque green ninja/samurai to cover all my favorite TF2 archetypes).

So I thought I'd make a fun thread and ask out of the current Overwatch Roster who do you think would make the cut to the game Heroes Of The Storm? I can easily see Winston making the cut and possibly Reinhart as well. Worth noting the newest hero Rexxar is a RANGED WARRIOR which I think is tailor made for Overwatch characters.

Keep in mind that the ranged one is Rexxar but he is actually squishy. His pet bear, Misha, is the actual warrior. Rexxar as a hero is really a ranged assassin and a melee warrior rolled into one (or rather a ranged assassin with his own personal tank).

    Quote from Zablinx >>
    Quote from Tasunke >>

Tracer is pretty much a given. May like some Mercy support and Reinhardt warrior.

I could see torbjon be put in. The guy makes turrets and would be a shoe in for a specialty class like Gazlowe.

This is the problem. Torbjorn would be too much like Gazlowe. In order to make him unique, he would have to only have one turret out at a time instead of multiple, but then the turret would have to be more powerful, but then that ability would be encroaching on Tychus's second ult. Granted, the medic hero they just added has an ability similar to Tychus's grenade and a trait similar to Muradin's, but still...

A lot of the Overwatch heroes are not different enough from heroes already in HotS and, IMO, would be better off as skins for existing ones. For example:

Widowmaker being a Nova skin (they're both snipers, they both wear skin tight body suits, and they both have specialized goggles... they even have the same hairstyle... need I say more?).

Roadhog being a Stitches skin (as Grandunit pointed out, they are both big dudes with chain hooks... this is the reason they had to take away the Butcher's hooking ability from Diablo 3; it would probably be the same with Roadhog unless they found a way to modify the way it functions to be different enough from Stitches's hook, so maybe just make him a skin instead... also they both have self healing abilities).

Torbjorn being a Gazlowe skin (like I said before, with their similar focus on turrets, it just makes sense; you could also say Symmetra fits as she also puts down lots of turrets, but skins in HotS have to use the same animations on the model as the original for the most part, so she probably would work and Torbjorn is already short like Gaz, plus they could more easily make a huge contraption on his back make more sense; Torbjorn also picks up scrap like Gaz and they could easily make translate Gazlowe's laser to have an animation that makes it look like Torbjorn's molten scrap gun firing, and they could also make his Robo Goblin ult look like Torbjorn's Molten Core ult was popped; really the only mechanic unique enough on Torbjorn to consider making him a unique hero for is his armor pickups).

Soldier: 76 being a Raynor skin (I mean, it wouldn't be all that different from his Commander Raynor skin as far as aesthetics goes... they both use automatic assault rifles and have healing abilities and hard hitting, single-target skill shots on cooldown; Just skin Adrenaline Rush to look more like the golden effect of Biotic Field and skin Penetrating Shot to look like the Helix Rockets and there you go... Yeah the ultimates don't line up, but auto-aim in HotS would be dumb anyway, and Blizz has made many other skins that don't have changed spell animations for the ultimates).

Reaper being a Valla skin (they both dual wield one-handed, ranged weapons, they both have strong mobility skills, and Death Blossom is practically identical to Strafe... not really sure there's any other justification needed for this one).

Hanzo being a Sylvanas skin (this one is a bit more of a stretch, but the HotS devs already had to put in a good amount of effort to make Sylvanas, Tyrande, and Valla unique from each other, and I'm not sure that they would be too keen on putting in yet another bow user as a separate hero; luckily he already has kind of a mystical assassin vibe that allows for it to still make sense to see him using Sylvanas's stuff; obviously they would have to change all the spell animations though... but just imagine her Wailing Arrow changed to look like Hanzo's Dragonstrike... would be awesome).

And even after all those, nearly every other Overwatch hero overlaps with an already existing HotS hero in some way or another. Reinhardt's ult is a lot like Thrall's Sundering and his charge is a lot like Diablo's. Also, not sure if his frontal shield would really make sense in a moba. Mercy's healing/damage buff beam could be cool, but the single-target, channeled heal mechanic is also being done by the newest hero Lt. Morales the medic. Also, she sure as hell wouldn't be able to keep her aoe resurrection ult. Symmetra's teleporter would be cool (like a one way Nydus worm that your whole team can use), but once again, how do they handle her turrets in such a way that they are distinct from Gazlowe's? Also, her shield is pretty the same as Tassadar's verbatim. Lucio's mechanics are also pretty well covered by Brightwing's constant aoe pulse healing, and his ult is pretty similar to the Stormshield talent.

Tracer would be cool to have, but we already have Zeratul with a blink and Kharazim with a dash that has charges, so they would have to find a way to make hers different. Bastion would be awesome too, but his different modes might feel to similar to how Sgt. Hammer works and I'm sure they want her to stay unique. Zarya would be interesting, but her ult is a lot like the upgraded version of the Butcher's Slaughterhouse ult. I also agree that Zenyatta would be a unique add to HotS (especially since it doesn't really have a hero that's focused around buffing and debuffing yet), but the problem with him is that his ult is practically identical to Malfurion's Tranquility ult.

I would say that McCree, Pharah, Winston, and Junkrat are probably the least like any HotS heroes. However, McCree's Flashbang is a lot like Muradin's Stormbolt. Pharah's Concussive Blast is a lot like Tychus's grenade (they could maybe remove the displacement effect, but keep the extra damage to shields to make it more unique). Winston is pretty unique, but his Primal Rage is feels like a combo of Sonya's two ultimates. And while Junkrat's kit is totally unique to this game, his Steel Trap probably wouldn't work in HotS as they've tried other immobilizing things and took them out (although those were aoe, so maybe it could still work if it was single-target).

So yeah... TLDR: While we should expect some Overwatch heroes in Heroes of the Storm eventually, don't be surprised if many of them are introduced as skins of other heroes and the ones that do end up being separate heroes will have to have their abilities modified to some degree so that they aren't stepping on the toes of other heroes, so to speak.

Totally called it that Junkrat would be like the TF2 demoman. Grenade launcher, check. Remote mines that can allow him to jump higher, check. So, basically he's a demoman that also has a bear trap and a long range mine instead of stuff that can allow him to specialize in melee. Fun times.

Yeah... could be laziness. I figure they just didn't feel like getting into trying to speculate the relative values of different world currencies in the future. Still could be something on the 25th... They could be planning to reveal the bank heist map that day.

Why do people always get this wrong?

Activision and Blizzard didn't merge. Merging implies that Blizzard was able to independently make the choice to combine with Activision into one company, but that is not what went down. Blizzard's longtime parent company, Vivendi bought out Activision and folded them into it's already existing games division (which included Blizzard, Sierra and others like Swingin' Ape studios which Blizzard themselves bought out). They created Activision-Blizzard as the umbrella company for their whole games division which included Activision and Blizzard as separate studios. They never really merged. Bobby Kotick became the CEO of the umbrella company and decided to let Blizzard operate as it's own entity as Vivendi had always done. Their relationship was mostly for publishing/distribution. And recently they were able to buy themselves from Vivendi, making Activision-Blizzard independent from it's former corporate overlords (fun fact, it was the policies and influence of Vivendi that pissed off the leaders of Blizzard North and caused them to leave the company causing that part of Blizzard to dissolve and be brought into the main body of Blizzard which lead to Diablo 3 being rebooted as a project twice), but the two studios are still together under that umbrella company. So yeah... because of that, the success of one helps the whole (truthfully, Activision had been leeching off of Blizzard's success with WoW for a while).

Something of note is that the mad scientist notes on the map that there will be several guys in blind spots on the map, yet believes him and Pig will be capable of pulling the heist off regardless, meaning he likely has some way of dealing with enemies around walls in-game. Judging by the fact that the route goes through a few stairs means it may not be a Payload map. There's also the fact that the big "KABOOM" is on top of the Town Hall, while our criminals are approaching through the museum. This suggests others in the Calaveras gang.

Who says payloads can't traverse stairs? Also, the "kaboom" has arrows pointing to either side of a small passageway between the town hall and bank. That is probably the first check point for the payload. Or perhaps that is where that first payload is left and you pick up a new one (the stolen cash) for the rest of the way.

Saying the game is fast paced is an understatement punctuated by bullets. Players run, leap, teleport out of thin air guns blazing and hammers swinging. The demos I’ve played haven’t just achieved the coveted 30 seconds of fun, they’ve held it captive.

Overwatch is Blizzard’s first original game in more than a decade and it may have been worth the wait. Out of the huge variety of characters you can choose from, no two play the same and you can switch between them in the middle of the match to adapt to the ever changing dynamic of the battlefield. Overwatch gives you choice, variety, great artwork and depth of play and all of that just in a demo.

Knowing your special abilities and owning them is what will give you an edge and there is something here for everyone. The ‘Team TISI +% Fortress 2′ Engineer in me can’t help but be gravitated towards ‘Overwatch’s’ own Torbjorn. This game is a breath of fresh air so far for Blizzard and Activision, I can only hope the full game lives up to the demos.

    What an in-depth article.

It's more about the video than the write up. But, once again, it's a business magazine. They wouldn't ever do any more than a short blurb on any video game. If you are looking for in depth magazine articles about Overwatch, look for PC Gamer or Electronic Gaming Monthly issues that cover it.

RevArtillery, I doubt that the smaller guy with the crazy hair is a support as he is most likely the explosives guy. Probably more of an offense character. Like others have said, I wouldn't be surprised if he is built around clearing out choke points and breaking Torbjorn/Symmetra/Bastion emplacements. Or perhaps he is a defense and plays like a TF2 demoman with bomb traps and such.

It's interesting enough to note that demoman does BOTH of those things in TF2, and not just the latter.

True, but I was saying the first part in reference to what the Spy does with his sapper. But instead of attaching a device that gradually drains away its life while disabling it, I was thinking he would like set up a bomb (probably from a distance) that counted down or something (so it could be destroyed if reacted to in time, like the sapper) then explodes, doing damage to players and turrets (but with a bonus to the turrets). Or maybe he could have remote mines similar to the demonman's sticky bombs (although hopefully not as spammy) for defense... Or both. Then he would have utility for both offense and defense... maybe then he would qualify as a support... kind of.

Judging by the evidence given with these two new heroes coming out, I wouldn't be surprised if the skinny dude with the crazy hair is something like your concept. I expect either a sapper that can easily destroy Torbjorn and Symmetra turrets (as well as Bastion in turret mode if he can get around him) or someone that does a lot of defensive bomb traps like the TF2 demoman... Now, expecting him to also do a flamethrower attack, I'm not so sure about that... I would expect more of a lobbed grenade or timed mines or something.

Judging by the detailed layout depicted in the "plans," I'd definitely say it's a map. That dotted line depicting a route through the map seems to imply a payload/escort map. However, it could be a hybrid like King's Row were you escort a payload of explosives then capture a point in the bank (depicted on the "plans" by the big dollar sign). But there's also an exit path, so maybe not. Maybe there's actually two separate payloads: first the explosives, then the money you've taken.

Either way, it's interesting that they made a map centered around robbing a bank. This is the first time that a map objective seems to have no direct connection with Overwatch or omnics and the second objective that is seemingly sinister (after the King's Row EMP aimed at peaceful omnics). And yeah, I would say the 'Calaveras' label on it is probably the name of the gang, since the Banco de Dorado thing is probably referring to Dorado, Mexico as that is one of the locations on that Overwatch globe showing "active threats" in the Soldier: 76 origin video.

Don't despair. Of course, the fact that my battle.net account still shows my computer using my old graphics card before I replaced it with a much better one probably helps... Blizzard likes to invite people with uncommon or outdated systems/components, because try to have their games work on a wide range of machines. posted a message on Doomfist

I'm sure others have noticed this and speculated elsewhere, but I felt the need to post something about it here:

So, at this Doomfist exhibit at the Numbani Heritage Museum, they have those three banners that seem to depict three different incarnations of the character known as "Doomfist." Some have speculated that the first two versions are the same man, but that he turned evil at some point. However, I think they are three separate characters that have taken upon themselves the name of "Doomfist" at different points in Overwatch history. Notice, for the first two pictures, that the gauntlet is on a different hand for the second person than the first. Also, you can spot differences in their faces, hair, and even the gauntlets they are using seem a little different.

Thus, this exhibit covers two past Doomfists and the current one. The first one was a good guy (possibly part of the original Overwatch), and the second one was a bad guy (that was possibly related to the first or stole the gauntlet from him and possibly modified it and then was defeated by Winston). And then the last one is also probably a bad guy judging by his version of the gauntlet. It's definitely different in design as it covers his whole arm. Also, the shoulder has spikes on it--implying an evil character--but most of him is silhouetted, implying that his identity is a mystery. My guess is that the Doomfist gauntlet in the cinematic (and in the Numbani map) was the one that belonged to the original Doomfist(s) and that this new "successor" Doomfist has created his own version of it based on the original (and perhaps that is why people keep trying to steal it... because maybe they are trying to get it to him).

posted a message on Lack of beta announcement at Gamescom

I never said they were working on both at the same time. I said that after they decided to scrap Titan and many of the team members were dispersed into other Blizzard teams, that that is when they started to work on Titan (basically what you said). Like I said before, they took a couple story elements (In Titan you played as an average citizen with a normal job that moonlighted as a superhero/secret agent. It took place in a near future Earth that was recovering from a recent war with aliens instead of robots like in Overwatch). It had some of the same overarching themes and probably a few gameplay mechanics (Metzen only says they took ideas) that transferred over (hence the "spiritual continuity" comment) and perhaps a similar art style, but I distinctly remember hearing or reading a Blizzard dev telling the story of how the remaining core members of the former Titan team created a new engine by cobbling together different things that they had been working on around the studio previously (IIRC it was during a Blizzcon panel or interview) and it kind of organically evolved into a objective-based shooter from there.

Not sure where you are getting the "six games in one" quote (or how you draw the conclusion that that means they directly recycled art assets from Titan considering they said that Overwatch is a "very different game from Titan"), but if one of them did say that, then it is probably referring to how you managed multiple sides of your characters life in Titan (Sometimes you would be fully involved in their day-to-day profession then switch gears to their elite soldier persona and carry out missions and such other times, and there were lots of paths of progression and ways to play the game.) By the way, random speculation on the WoW forums doesn't really mean much...

Edit: Here's the article I am referring to for how Titan played and its backstory: http://kotaku.com/heres-what-blizzards-titan-actually-was-1638632121. Notice some of the similarities... A class called Reaper, the Jumper class had a similar ability set to Tracer, etc. Sadly, no real screenshots of the original Titan have leaked to confirm that it always had a TF2-esque art style.

P.S. As to your earlier point of it only taking a month or two to develop a new hero: http://www.shacknews.com/article/90800/destiny-call-of-duty-and-other-activision-franchises-could-be-added-to-heroes-of-the-storm

“In the early development phase of Heroes of the Storm, we made arrangements with various teams, especially the groups working on new content or a new IP [like] Overwatch.” Milker goes on to describe the process of adding a new Hero in Heroes of the Storm requires anywhere between six months to a year in order to make sure the character blends well with the game’s mechanics.

    So yeah...

posted a message on Future Samurai x) HAI!!

I, too, am really looking forward to this character (I personally wish it was him that was revealed at PAX East instead of McCree, but oh well), so I am going to do a more detailed response to this. I hope I don't come off as too nit-picky or critical; I'm just really excited for this character and have my own ideas about what he is about. Take everything with a grain of salt as this is all just speculation anyway.

First off, I think you are spot on with making him an agile, stealthy and aggressive character. Implementing a melee offense character may be challenging for them, but I think Blizzard is capable of doing it and this game seems like it is just off-the-wall enough to make it work. Plus, just the look of this guy screams "melee fighter/assassin." By the way, I think it's kind of funny that you call him a samurai in the thread title, but designed him to fight like a ninja. ;]

So, you decided to defer the lore part to Blizzard or forum speculation... I actually have some ideas and evidence about this guys identity. I think you are definitely right to assume he is Japanese. If you look closely at his armor, you can even make out silver kanji below his chest. I would go even further, though. I can't really say much about specifics; but, ever since I got a good look at the screenshots of Hanamura, this guy's general backstory seemed pretty apparent.

If you look at this screenshot: http://bnetus-a.akamaihd.net/overwatch/static/media/screenshot/hanamura-screenshot-003.40yiF.jpg, you will notice the bloody slash mark on the scroll that Metzen pointed out during one of the Blizzcon panels. This is left over from when Hanzo supposedly killed his brother because he refused to take his rightful place under him as a leader in their clan. However, just because he gave him grievous wound, doesn't mean he actually killed him... If you look at the painting on the wall above the slashed scroll, you will notice that it's of two warriors--an archer in blue and a swordsman in green. Hanzo's outfit has elements of blue and the emblem on the sleeves of the archer in the painting is very similar to the icon of Hanzo's ultimate, Dragonstrike. The mysterious cyber-ninja's armor is light grey with multiple green, circular elements on it, which can be compared to the headband of the green-clad swordsman in the painting which is light grey with a pattern of green dots.

Looking further at the line-up art the hero in question is part of: http://bnetus-a.akamaihd.net/overwatch/static/media/wallpaper/lineup-standard.3DDlu.jpg, you will notice he has a cloth covering his head that has trailing bits that look similar in style to those of Hanzo's hair tie and is also reminiscent of the green archer in the Hanumara wall mural. I would also say that not only are they equally spaced out from Torbjorn in the middle, but their poses in that picture seem to very closely mirror each other. So, yeah... when you add all the subtle clues together, I'd say the message is clear: Our mystery swordsman in the high-tech armor suit is none other than Hanzo's supposedly dead brother. The question is, of course, how is he still alive? Also, how did he end up in this suit with this bad-ass katana with the energized blade? Does he have to be in it to stay alive? Does Hanzo know he is still alive? If not, then does his brother want to keep his identity a secret? Does he even remember who he is and will Hanzo ever find out? Does he have animosity towards Hanzo? It makes me wonder, too, if, when he is finally announced, will Blizzard even reveal who he really is, or will they make him like Reaper with a secret identity to be possibly revealed later?

Anyways, enough of that... On to his abilities...

His left mouse attack seems pretty obvious and straightforward. Probably just a regular sword slash attack, as you stated.

As for his right mouse ability, I don't think the shield thing make sense. Although it would be nice for him to be able to mitigate the damage of all the ranged heroes, it doesn't really match the more aggressive, in-your-face play style that an offensive, agile melee hero would have. Also, the ability you proposed just seems too similar to Reinhardt's right mouse ability. Take a look at one of the art pieces he is featured in during the cinematic trailer: http://www.itsartmag.com/features/itsart/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/Overwatch-First-Trailer-7.jpg. His stance and the way the the dust and rocks are being kicked up and behind him implies forward movement. So either it's being caused by his own forward momentum or by the force of a sword swing. Given the way he seems to be forming the fingers of his off-hand around the grip of the sword while this is going on, I'm inclined to think it's the former. Also, given that, in the line-up picture, his shoes have those glowing, green protrusions and how his heels look like they are slightly floating off the ground, I would say he most likely has a good amount of mobility through his footwear. Thus, I would speculate that his right mouse ability is more akin to Soldier: 76 or Lucio's right-mouse ability, where--instead of a more traditional alternate fire--they have another ability with a short cooldown, and that his would be a short dash attack where he moves forward a few meters very quickly (like Tracer's blink, but shorter range) and swipes at everything in front of him. And if it isn't that, then I would say it could also be a powerful slash attack that unleashes a short wave of green lightning that emanates from his energized blade edge that possibly uses some sort of very limited ammo/energy resource.

For the shift ability, I like the sound of the one you came up with; but, now that we know that Soldier: 76 does a sprint ability that is interrupted by attacking, this guy can't really use a similar concept. However, as I pointed out before, his design definitely conveys mobility, agility, and fancy footwork. So, I would propose a different kind of movement ability where he temporarily sheaths his sword and uses those interesting-looking shoes of his to boost himself forward really quickly in one long charge (about the distance of three Tracer blinks all at once). A melee hero like this needs to be able to close gaps quickly and reliably, so maybe his shoes kind of make him hover a bit off the ground and could allow him to easily bypass terrain/line-of-sight blockers by causing him to automatically path around them while charging. Or perhaps he can have full control of his turning while executing the charge (like a TF2 Demoman with the Tide Turner shield). I would also like to see such an ability give him some sort of damage negation (either a flat % reduction or some kind of dodge mechanic) while doing the charge. This sort of thing would have a long-ish cooldown.

While agree that he could benefit from some sort of limited duration invisibilty/stealth mechanic, I don't think that should be his ultimate. Personally, I would rather see a short stealth mode be his E ability (perhaps in conjunction with the smoke bomb you suggested) and, instead, make his Q something along the lines of a high-damaging, wide-area flurry of attacks. Like he just goes crazy for a few seconds and unleashes a torrent of extremely fast slashes in a 180 degree frontal arc. Perhaps he could even deflect (knocking them away with his blade) some or all incoming regular attacks that hit him in the area of effect.

For his E, it should definitely be a more utility-oriented ability like other heroes. I like your smoke bomb idea. Like I said, I think it would be cool if he triggers a few seconds of stealth when he throws it (and just throws it down at his feet) so he can sneak away like a ninja. He could also have a system like the TF2 Spy invis watch where you hit it to turn invisible at will and it drains an energy bar as it goes and deactivating it lets the energy recharge (as opposed to having a straight-up cooldown). As for the railgun idea, I think it's an interesting idea to let him have a long-range attack to pick off people too far away to approach normally, but I don't feel like it really fits his kit. I kind of like the toxic blade idea, but it wouldn't make sense to have this high-tech, electrified katana to be emitting poison into the air. It would have to be giving off that green lightning stuff, instead. Also, a flat damage boost is kind of... bland... So, yeah, I would definitely like to see him have some kind of escape ability that hinders enemies' ability to see/target him instead of yet another damage thing.

And finally, his special movement ability for the space key. While I like the idea of giving him a cool extra movement mechanic built into his jump like they did for Hanzo and Lucio, I would have to agree with Tigris that making him jump really high would be weird for a melee hero since being able to reach high vantage points doesn't really do much for someone with such a short-range weapon (except for being able to chase heroes like Hanzo and Widowmaker more easily). Plus, Winston already has a long/high jump ability. Also, wall running has already be done in a couple different ways, so that idea's out too... I would say that, instead of making it so he builds up jumping power by holding down space, that a simple double/triple jump mechanic (where hitting space at the apex of a jump makes him boost a little higher into the air than normal heroes can reach, but it's not like a full-on, Pharah-style rocket jump) would suffice for allowing him to get around easier in some areas without him allowing to parkour everywhere (and he would still be kited by ranged heroes with that sort of thing, anyway).

posted a message on Lack of beta announcement at Gamescom

This game was never Titan. Titan was the next gen MMO that some of the Overwatch team was working on before this game, but it was scrapped. Overwatch doesn't use anything from Titan except a few bits and pieces of the general backstory. After Titan was cancelled, the team that was working on it was restructured and trimmed down. What was left built a new engine from scratch, not knowing what kind of game they were going to make with it. Then they decided to start working on the game that would become Overwatch. That was a couple years ago now. But yeah, they've already hammered out a lot of the story elements and such, but not necessarily the particular backstory for each hero. They probably have a large line up of heroes still in the pipeline at various levels of completion, just like they do for Heroes of the Storm. However, for heroes that they haven't started yet, the entire process definitely takes a good deal longer than a month to get from concepts to a finished, release-ready hero. Also, don't assume that the live game will follow the same schedule of new heroes being released as they using now for new heroes being unveiled in the pre-beta stage.

posted a message on Lack of beta announcement at Gamescom
It doesn't really mean much... Just that they haven't pinned down an exact date that they want to share with the public yet. I'm not sure why so many people assume that they have to make all their announcements at gaming conventions and such, as they have shown in the past that that is not the case. This is especially true with smaller things like beta start dates. Honestly, I always assumed that they would just post a blog article one day, without warning, to the Overwatch news site as they have done with testing phases with other games. So yeah... sit tight and cool your jets.

I would say that their rate of announcing things has definitely sped up, and I wouldn't assume much more than another map or two before beta, just so there's more variety of content to play through. There's already plenty of heroes (and just because there's still a couple to go from the Blizzcon Overwatch poster, doesn't mean they won't be held back for a while).

    Quote from dagz »

If they are follow the heroes of the storm strategy, then I'm guessing it takes them around a month to make a new hero, so I'm guessing beta around blizzcon, but hopefully sooner like October.

Actually, no. Yeah, they release heroes about a month apart, but they work on them all for several months. Rexxar has been around in videos and trailers since Blizzcon 2013, but he's just recently been officially announced. They have tons of heroes in their pipeline at any one time. It's just a matter of which one they want to push through first and having to work around voice actor schedules and stuff like that. Also, I would say that more goes into designing new Overwatch heroes than HotS ones, seeing how as they have to be created from scratch--in both mechanics and story. Also, the character models in FPS's are much larger, more elaborate, and more detailed than any MOBA art asset.

    1. The tauren marine from that picture (for Heezow: http://sonsofthestorm.com/viewer.php?artist=samwise&cat=starcraft&art=22) would more likely be a skin for ETC in Heroes of the Storm. In fact, that model already exists in the SC2 editor. BTW, that art piece is based off of one of the songs that Elite Tauren Chieftain (Blizzard's in-house rock band made up of Samwise Didier, Mike Morhaime, Chris Sigaty, Alan Dabiri, and Dave Berggren) plays and the version of the picture that Tribunal posted is a fake CD cover from a commercial that plays on the TV in the Hyperion cantina in the Wings of Liberty campaign, IIRC.

    2. If the game is free to play, there will probably be skins. I personally hope there are at least some visual customization options (even if it's just color variations and such) to set you apart from others no matter what kind of business model they go for, as there will probably be no equippable cosmetic items (as far as we know).

posted a message on Overwatch: Steam Greenlight?

You must be new to Blizzard in general, then. Battle.net isn't just that desktop app. That's just a unified launcher program that replaced the individual game launchers they were using for WoW and, to a lesser extent, SC2 and D3. Battle.net has been Blizzard's platform for it's online games since they introduced it with Diablo 1 (released in the mid 90s) and after putting out Starcraft 1, they came out with a new version of Warcraft 2 (originally released a few years before that point) with multiplayer added (Warcraft 2 Battle.net Edition). Anyways, yeah... B.net has always been how you play online in Blizzard games and it's also where they host all their websites from. It predates Valve's Steam service by several years. But around the time that Hearthstone was coming out, Blizz decided to make a B.net launcher app to make their platform more accessible and streamlined. Unlike Steam, though, I wouldn't ever expect Blizz to sell or host non-Blizz games on it (not even Activision stuff), nor for it to ever have a big game library on it like EA's Origin. Unless Blizz goes through ridiculous growth over the next few years, that is.

Just thought I'd post this little tidbit of history here, for those of you who are interested in learning more about Metzen's comic book hero that he had the Overwatch team repurpose as a main protagonist of this game's universe:

    http://www.sonsofthestorm.com/report_soldier76.html

It's an old "Battle Report" on sonsofthestorm.com (a site made and maintained by a few of Blizzard's most prominent concept artists) by Metzen himself detailing the concept of his comic book about the original Soldier: 76 that he had been working on a several years ago. I personally find it interesting and cool that he was able to give this old character idea new life in this game.

posted a message on Should Overwatch Sell a "Hero Pack" similar to Smite's "Ultimate God Pack"?

I don't think they should sell heroes at all.

There's two problems depending on whether or not they charge for the game, and if not, whether they charge for heroes. If they are planning on charging for heroes then I seriously doubt they will do as Smite did. As far as I've heard/read the company that produced Smite only did the "buy all current and future heroes for a one-time fee" thing because they were desperate for money to keep the game going at the time. And after the amount of players picked up, they ended up regretting doing it because it gave away so much value for so little profit. Considering the price points of Heroes, I find it unlikely that Blizz would ever do that with Overwatch unless they are planning on far fewer heroes or, at least, far less frequent new heroes. Maybe then they might make a few bundles that group together a handful of heroes each so that every hero is in some bundle, but once again, I doubt they'd do all of them in one bundle.

If they do charge for the game then it's a moot point, because they'd probably then just do all of the content for free, except maybe cosmetics. The thing with cosmetics is, Overwatch is not like TF2 in that the heroes don't have different pieces of equipment or even individual cosmetic slots (at least not yet) that can be swapped out and making new items for both categories is a huge part of TF2's monetization. So the only thing that's a possibility (as far as we know) is entire skins and recolors for each hero. The fans already presuppose that they are going to do skins, but it didn't really seem like the devs were considering such (at least they didn't give any real indication that they were).

Obviously they are holding their cards close to their chest when it comes to the business model of Overwatch as, last we heard, they were still undecided on it. Given their recent trends in making their games that are not of their base 3 franchises be of the f2p model, I wouldn't be surprised if Overwatch is too. But, at the same time, I could see it be a boxed product, depending on how much content and features they want to front load it with. Who knows... we may not even see much customization with the heroes and have it just mainly be about having lots of gameplay options with some minor flare unlockables on your profile for achievements and such. Or there may be a full-blown cosmetics shop... we just have to wait and see...

Either way, I think it's kind of pointless to speculate how they are going to sell things when we don't even know what's for sale yet... But yeah... definitely don't hold your breath for "all current and future heroes" bundle if you aren't just buying all content with the game up front.

I'm going to try to get around to trying them all fairly early on and I'm pretty excited for most of them. I will probably prioritize Pharah, Hanzo, and Zarya (in that order), as well as the cyber ninja depending on what he actually does. I also checked Reaper, Tracer, Symmetra, Reinhardt, and Zenyatta and will probably get to them in that order or close to it after I've had my initial fill of my priority heroes. Bastion looks intriguing to me, too, but I'm not sure how much I'll like his self-immobilizing mechanic, so he ends up the first of the leftovers...

One hit killing a single hero with an ult isn't really that op considering the other ults in this game that allow for easy multikills in one activation or resurrect multiple characters at once in the case of Mercy... And doing aoe damage on hitting a surface seems reasonable depending on the amount and radius.

When i read that i decided to go on youtube and look again and actually they can still shoot when inside the Graviton Surge, it just deals damage and Holds them in one place for a few seconds. So if the enemy team gets stuck and sees Tracer comming they will try to stop her from using pulse bomb, Tracer will blink in, bomb, recall, boom.

Really? Can you link the video you saw that in? Even if that is the case, the Graviton Surge is throwing you around while inside it, so I'd imagine your aim would be pretty off.

Zarya's ult is definitely one that can synergize well with pretty much everyone (imagine catching an entire team in it then Hanzo ulting into the middle of it while Bastion, Widowmaker and Torbjorn set up outside the enemy spawn and massacre them as they come out), but I would say her projected shield is just as enabling, especially with ultimates that involve the hero needing to expose themselves to make the most of it (such as McCree, Bastion, Pharah, Reaper and Winston's ults). I guess it just boils down to Zarya being really good at setting her team up to dominate. Wouldn't be surprised if she sees some nerfs, at some point...

She definitely seems to be more engaging than the comparable Torbjorn, who will probably be camping at his turret most of the time. All of her utility might be too good, though... I guess we will just have to wait and see... I just hope that no one hero is ever seen as required to win (especially since they seem to intend to add many more heroes to the roster, over time), no matter which side your team is on.

Torbjörn, he just screams TF Engineer, and not that that is a particularly bad thing, it just feels unoriginal to me. Symmetra seems so much more original with a similar kit.

It is a bad thing. Builder classes are so un-engaging. They are basically designed to camp... boring. The worse thing about them is that they don't really have to put any effort into kills. They put up a turret (or several) then just stand there waiting for the ai to gun people down and occasionally smack their turret to repair it (this was demonstrated about as well as it could be in that recent gameplay video wherein the guy got play of the game as Torbjorn because his turret killed 4 players while he was simultaneously jumping off a random balcony to his death... does that sound like compelling gameplay?). Weeeeee... I could never understand how people could stand to play like that in TF2 other than the fact that engineers are necessary for defense and it's easy kills. IMO, both of those things are design flaws, and I hoped that Blizzard wouldn't go in the same direction. Sadly, it seems they have. Hopefully they are willing to make Torbjorn more about being an active support to his team (his armor powerup ability points to that style of play) with the turret just being a side mechanic that supplements his role. So far, it seems like Symmetra is more in that area, but there's no reason Torbjorn can't be too. I would be happy if they made his turret easier to make, but weaker overall so he is encouraged to actively place and replace new ones often. Even making it so he is able to make two weaker ones so he has to keep tabs on both and move back and forth between them, participating in battles while doing so would be nice.

Winston, i just dont really like the way he holds his gun or him in general. I also don't like tanks. Anyone got info of the tank-looking character with the gasmask and gastank on his back from the overwatch wallpaper? Because if he is a fire hero i will hate him.

How do you expect an ape to hold a gun that size? I see no gas tank on that guy's back. I do see a hose running from his weird shoulder pad to his gun, and I remember the silhouette of him having him holding a chain-hook and a short and wide gun. So maybe it's a flame thrower, but it could also be some kind of poison gas sprayer. Either way, it is probably a short range cone attack.

From a character standpoint, my least favorites are Reaper and McCree. Reaper is just your run of the mill "dark evil badguy with shadow and darkness and shadowey darkness wooo" and McCree is just a cowboy with a cyber arm. Boring.

From a gameplay standpoint, my least favorite is Zenyatta. A super fragile support with no mobility skills who needs to stay alive to remain effective? Yeeeaahh...I dunno about that.

Yeah, in some ways Reaper is kind of generic, but his look is an interesting and modern take on the Death personified theme. And his voice is just cool...

Does he need to stay alive to remain effective? I got the impression that his orb buff/debuff stay active even if he is down. I personally like his flavor and especially like how he can charge up his attack to do a rapid fire variant without having to constantly reload like McCree (and it looks more accurate than McCree's alt fire as well)

Not sure why all the Zenyatta hate. He seems a lot more interesting than Mercy who just seems like a modified TF2 medic clone. Just like the TF2 engineer, I view the TF2 medic as a kill leech as all a medic has to do to rack up kills and points on the leaderboard is latch onto a heavy and stay behind him, occasionally popping their uber when there's a lot of enemies around or an engineer nest to bust through (which leads to even more free kills, of course). But at least they made Mercy somewhat more engaging by giving her good mobility and changing out the broken activated invulnerability mechanic of the medic with the tactical puzzle of knowing when best to heal and when to use the damage buff stream instead.

Yes, originally I would've said I dislike Mercy the most, until PAX East happened, that is... Now I would say McCree. I don't really have a problem with his aesthetics or stereotypical Clint Eastwood-wannabe persona. It's his gameplay that looks bad. Maybe it's that everyone we saw footage of playing him sucked, or maybe it was that he was under-tuned for the PAX demo build, but he just looked weak and slow. The nature of his gun means he has a relatively slow rate of fire with a tiny clip (so he's constantly reloading, hence why they tacked on the free reload to his mediocre movement ability). His damage with each shot didn't seem all that great either and the alt fire seemed pretty inaccurate, making it fairly ineffective in the heat of battle even when used in closer range like it should be. He also seemed to move kind of slow as well. On top of all that, his ultimate, even though it was hyped as being OP, seemed lackluster in actuality. The mechanic is interesting, for sure, but it leaves McCree so wide open for such a long time that it is easily countered and, thus, pretty situational.

I personally think that to make McCree competitive with the likes of Tracer, Zarya, and others in such a fast-paced game, they need to make some fundamental changes to him. First they need to increase his rate of fire by a good amount. Second they need to make his alt fire more precise. If they really want him to be focused on being a sharpshooter like they indicated during the presentation, they need to make his revolver capable of headshots like the TF2 spy's Ambassador pistol. Also, they need to make his roll go farther and his stun grenade last a bit longer. Finally, they should possibly consider overhauling his ult. It is cool, in theory, and goes with his theme, but it seems hard to balance. Either they make it take a relatively long time to line up kill shots like it is now which leaves him a sitting duck unless he somehow pulls it off from a good hiding place that still has line-of-sight on the battlefield (and it seems like all of those will be snipers perches that it would be hard or impossible for him to get to) or they make it quicker, which may make it too good. So, yeah... McCree needs work.

posted a message on Is Symmetra the best character?

Gotta agree with Spirit... She is powerful but not OP, and her build-a-nest-and-camp playstyle (akin to Torbjorn and all "builder" classes) does seem boring, especially to those of us who like to be aggressive no matter what we are playing.

    As to your points, Mongrel:

    • Yes her primary attack locks on, but it is also pretty short range, so most of the time when she is able to use it she is in a lot of danger herself. It will probably be used mostly to supplement the damage of her turrets when someone wanders into the are she has locked down.
    • Yeah, going through shields is pretty nice and it does a good amount of damage, but it also has to be charged up each time so it uses up ammo quickly and has a slow rate of fire.
    • Yep. Teleporter is powerful. However it is her ult, so if it is found and destroyed quickly, it will have a while before it is up again. It's not like the TF2 Engineer's teleporter where you can have it back up fairly quickly (although the flip side of this is that it doesn't need to be upgraded). The thing with this game is that most characters are already pretty mobile on their own, so I don't think not having a teleporter will be as bad as you may think. I heard that there were foward spawning positions, but maybe that was only for attackers after capping a point.
    • I didn't know the turrets slowed. The perfect accuracy is to be expected as they are ai-controlled and also use the same energy beam that her primary fire does. And, yes, she can have up to 6 at a time, last they told us (at Blizzcon). Also, remember that they can be stuck to most surfaces that have the space, so you always have to be aware of what's above you (but considering the rest of the game, you should get used to that) as well as below.

Personally I hope that her weaknesses will balance out her strengths enough that she doesn't become required for wins (especially considering the relatively low amount of players on a team). Hopefully the other defensive and support characters (including those that have yet to be announced) will be competitive enough with her abilities so that a good amount of variety is maintained.

Pretty sure that guy in the picture is just one of the many generic Overwatch soldiers they showed in the trailer. Also, you have to remember that Overwatch began 30 years ago in the current time frame and that Overwatch was shut down a few years previous to this game's setting. Therefore this guy, even if he was a playable hero, would not actually work for or "manage" Overwatch anymore, because Overwatch doesn't actually exist at this point in time. The game's story (which is not even going to be actually told within the game) is really about how the rag tag former Overwatch members and those that aspired to join it or would be good fits for it will possibly eventually reform it. Also, why would the guy who founded Overwatch be leading elite squadrons out into the field? The leader of any organization, even military, would be in an office or some command post, not in the field. He would be seen as too important for his life to be in that much danger. The whole war with Talon idea sounds feasible, but how could this guy be Mercy's first patient when she had a prominent medical career in Switzerland before joining Overwatch after having become head of surgery at her hospital and making breakthroughs in nanobiology (which they've never said means she could regrow limbs, it's more likely that this guy would have to have them replaced with cybernetic prosthetics like McCree or Symmetra have). Also, don't you think it's kind of messed up that his long-time friend would laugh at him after having his limbs all blown off?

In the future, I would avoid making up arbitrary origin stories for Overwatch when Blizzard clearly already has something concrete in mind. In fact, we already know exactly why it was formed (to fight the renegade Omnics). By the way, no one in the west would call Heaven the "Overworld."

Backstory aside, you did come up with interesting abilities, although you made the cooldown on his shift too long. Most cooldowns in this game, so far, are around 10-15 seconds.

For support ill probably go Mercy healing and damage boost in one healing staff thing? Hell yeah! To fly around and rez will be fun too.

Just so you know, Mercy doesn't actually fly around on her own power like Pharah can. She can use Guardian Angel to fly to someone who is already in the air; but, after that point, all she can do is use Angelic Descent to slowly glide back to the ground. However, she can't stay up unless she has another Guardian Angel target at a higher point.

Coming up with "the best" heroes or even my "top picks" is a hard one. Depends on how you define those concepts. Aesthetically, I think the best hero is Reaper, but I'm not so sure I would enjoy actually playing him. As far as capability, I think some of the best (read: OP) heroes are probably Bastion, Widowmaker, Zarya and Tracer. And as far as which ones are my top picks for the ones I think I would enjoy the most, I would go with Pharah and Hanzo. However, that might change when the cyber ninja guy is finally revealed.

Yeah, that was definitely the best part of that video. Both funny and sad at the same time, but I guess we shouldn't be surprised. Kind of highlights what's wrong with builder classes when they can run around aimlessly and randomly jump to their death while simultaneously getting credited with a kill streak because of their turret(s). Anyway, IMO, the real play of the game was the guy beating Reinhardt to death with his Forge Hammer without even having Molten Core active.

It was fun to play at PAX, however... it was super under-tuned and was not worth using as its duration was super short, you had no mobility and virtually no defensive capabilities. If anybody was to your sides, turning was difficult.

Interesting... You'd think a tank could, you know... tank. I guess he will have to rely on team mate support to get the most out of this form. And, yeah, in the video it looks like it lasts all of 10 seconds. I suppose ultimates can be charged relatively quickly depending on how much damage you are dishing out, but I would agree that it could stand to last little longer (depending on how damaging it is). It certainly looks to be more about offense than defense (like Bastion usually is); so, like I said before, it seems as though Blizz wanted to try giving him an ult that rounded his mostly turtle-y kit out with something that could push for objectives more actively. Then again, considering how quickly he can switch between siege and assault configurations, I'm not so sure he needed it.

Indeed. It looks like the Omnics found a way to access Hammer Space, the pocket dimension old cartoon characters utilized to pull giant hammers, signs that say "HELP!" and other such things seemingly from thin air just by reaching behind their backs or off screen.

Yeah I was noticing the same thing about the double Zarya team. I had to chuckle to myself a bit when the enemy Reaper was trying to take them on by himself. The guy in the video pretty much took no damage for as long as the Reaper was shooting at him.

I too really like the aesthetics of Reaper (hence my avatar), but I've always though it was strange how he reloads by throwing away his shotguns and pulling a new pair out of nowhere (as he doesn't have any extra visibly holstered on his person anywhere). However, I'm not sure yet if I'll enjoy his playstyle. Or rather, I'm definitely an aggressive player, but I'm not sure I would like fighting with shotguns as opposed to a more accurate or long range weapon.

I'm most intrigued by Pharah (as I like to play soldier in TF2 and she seems like a soldier on steroids) and Hanzo (as I also like to play huntsman sniper and he seems like one of those on steroids... and crack). I'm also really curious about the cyber ninja guy that hasn't been officially announced as I also really like being a demoknight and I would love to see what Blizz does for a more fast and agile melee character as opposed to the lumbering Reinhardt. Lastly, I hope they put in a hero akin to the TF2 pyro at some point (as he what I play the most). Judging by appearances, I wouldn't be surprised if the guy in the hazmat suit is probably going to be something like that (but sprays chemicals or poison gas instead of fire).

Yeah, I would've said Reinhardt as well, but after seeing Zarya's ult for the first time (I love gravity well-type abilities, Black Hole is probably my favorite D3 ability), I was sold. I'm already used to the arching grenade-style of fire she has from playing a good amount of demo early on in my TF2 "career" and I really like her mechanic of doing more damage after absorbing damage with her shields. After watching that footage of the guy getting repeated kill streaks on her, I'm wondering if it was that guy being really good or her being OP.

Definitely seems to be a big boost to his power (which was already seemingly formidable). It certainly looks like this mode does a lot of damage. I just wonder if this will make him even more vulnerable to flanking and such without the aoe of his mine to cover his blind spots while sieged.

If you say so... She just seems like a more mobile version of the medic with a damage boost instead of an uber charge (and still with a rapid fire side arm). Sure, she's probably more tactical in that she has to make the choice of when to go for the damage boost over the heal while in the middle of combat, but she still seems like she will be a similar playstyle of pick a high damage and/or high health hero to cling to and ride them like a pony to a high kill count/point total that you didn't actually earn with your own damage (can you tell I'm salty about medic + heavy combos?). I truly hope that Mercy will turn out to be more engaging, more complex, and less of a leech than the TF2 medic, but I would not be surprised in the slightest if we end up with pocket Mercies on the various tanks being a common "strategy" the way pocket medics (and even chains of medics) on heavies are in TF2. I'm just glad there are no stupid activated invulnerability mechanics in Overwatch (yet).

Ditto. But considering they've never stated that there will be a public alpha like Heroes had, I'm doubting it... It's very possible that there will be some friends and family only one like they've done in the past, but unless they for some reason decide to spring a tech alpha or something on us out of the blue, we probably shouldn't count on it. I'm trying to remember, though... did they announce that they were doing a tech alpha for Heroes at the same Blizzcon they announced the game itself or did they announce it later?

Hurray, another freaking 6 months till Beta, at least! /headdesk I don't get why they had to stir up hype with the press event at their campus and make it seem like Beta was around the corner just to dash our hopes shortly thereafter. I'm already so bored with every other shooter I used to enjoy... Why must they torture us so?!

Looks like you were half right Facilier. Funny thing is, I don't think Zarya was in any of the art we've seen before this point. It makes me wonder why they decided to put her forward before the many other heroes we had already seen hints of in the Blizzcon previews.

I totally called it on McCree's playstyle, though. I knew from the moment I saw him in the lineup at Blizzcon that he would play like an Ambassador spy with some quickdraw elements thrown in.

It's possible that she was originally the pictured guy and they just decided they wanted another female character. I am a bit curious, either way why we haven't seen anything about cyberninjafriend or the huge guy.

I suppose the good thing about another six months till beta is that we will probably see two more heroes and another map introduced before by the time it starts.

My guess for the reason why the other two shown at the Blizzcon lineup is the same reason you stated for why it's possible that they changed the direction of that guy in the corner: because they wanted to announce another female hero. And there are certainly others you can spot amongst the art shown in the announcement trailer and Blizzcon panels (such as the one dual-wielding swords, the one with the huge mechanic legs attached on her back, and even a female-looking omnic) that they could've put forward first, but I also think they wanted it to be a new tank since there was only two announced, so far. The big Mad Max-style guy looks to have a chain hook, so he will probably be a tank as well. And considering that the cyber ninja dude is probably offense, we may not see him revealed for a while...

Yeah... I'm guessing that's specifically a lot of the reason for the amount of time it's going to take until beta (finishing more heroes and maps, that is) as well as more features in general, because, as far as I've heard and read, most that have actually played the Overwatch demos think it's beta quality already.

Heh... And here I was wondering if I was the only one to notice this... Yeah... she's a really bottom-heavy character (between the large legs and the large gun held low) despite having a strong upper body. I'm not sure if it's supposed to be the pants or the armor that make her legs look wide/big around or if she, for some weird reason, has disproportionately huge leg muscles.

posted a message on Which support will you be playing?

I've never really been much of a support player (considering the only true support in TF2--which is the only game like this one that I've played--is the medic and I mostly detest the leech-off-kills playstyle and the ridiculousness of both the normal invulnerability uber and Kritzkrieg uber, especially when used on heavies), but I'm probably going to try every hero in Overwatch at some point.

Of the three announced supports so far, I'm probably going to gravitate to Symmetra the most. Seeing how as Mercy seems to be pretty similar in playstyle as the TF2 medic, I will probably play her the least. Symmetra seems to be a more active version of the TF2 engie, and since I always enjoyed being more aggressive when I did play engie in TF2 (usually using a combo of the Gunslinger to get the fast-building mini-sentry and the Frontier Justice shotgun to get revenge crits corresponding to how many kills my mini-sentry had gotten when it is destroyed) and found the camp-fest playstyle of the stock engie to be boring, I'll probably prefer her over Torbjorn, as well. Also, her teleporter seems invaluable in a game like Overwatch to the point that I worry that she will become a requirement for a team to actually be competitive in most, if not all game modes. Hopefully there will be sufficient counterplay against it that this will not be the case.

That being said, Zenyatta looks really interesting to me, as well, and he could become my favorite support, after I've tried them all. Not only do his buff/debuff mechanics look cool, but I also really like his ability to charge up his attack to fire off the entire "clip" in rapid succession. Also, his whole flavor of being a robot monk that constantly hovers in a meditation pose and uses energy orbs that float around his head like the beads of a big necklace for his attacks and abilities is just cool.

Edit: How come I can't see the poll results?

posted a message on Ideas For New Map Modes

Characters like Tracer might make CTF inherently imbalanced, but it's no different than the Scout in TF2. Hell, the Scout even has an equip-able item that can be used to make him invulnerable for a time, allowing him to completely bypass defenses to get to the flag (granted, he can't pick up the flag while using it). As for Deathmatch, a game like Overwatch (and TF2, for that matter) doesn't really work with Deathmatch because the characters are too specialized. DM only really works when the characters you play are more for aesthetics and anyone can use every weapon.

I personally am not as huge of a fan of KotH, but there's no reason it shouldn't be in. I would also love to see payload race maps in (especially ones that make you go near the enemy base or have the payloads cross paths for a while) as well as special delivery and attack/defend maps with tug-of-war-style capture points. Haven't tried Mannpower, yet, but those power-ups look interesting. I would also like to see stuff like the Invisibility, Flight, and Kamikaze power-ups they had in Quake 3.

Speaking of Quake 3, I would love for them to try more interesting game modes like they had in Team Arena such as Harvester, Overload, and one-flag CTF. I think they should also take a look at the Unreal Tournament series for inspiration. I think modes like Domination/Double Domination, Assault, Onslaught/Warfare, and Bombing Run could all work for Overwatch, although stuff like Betrayal, Last Man Standing, Mutant/Titan and Greed are probably too Deathmatch-oriented (although having the players become the objective can lead to interesting mechanics, so I hope they are open to it).

Edit: After thinking about it, I'm not sure a power-up mode would work for the same reason that DM doesn't. The power-ups could grossly accentuate the different character's inherent strengths and weaknesses making them become straight-up OP. Think about Tracer with a speed or quickdraw power-up or Bastion with vampire or reinforce or Reinhardt with reflection or regeneration. Those sorts of situations could become ridiculous very fast. Then again, I guess if both sides are getting power-ups all the time, maybe the OP-ness would balance itself out.

Also, I thought of another mode I would love to see: co-op vs. many ai enemies along the lines of Invasion in UT2k4 or Mann vs. Machine in TF2.

Edit: Sadly, it looks like CTF is out due to it being to hard to balance with multiple highly mobile characters according to the dev Q&A at the recent press event: http://overking.com/news/posts/174-overwatch-closed-beta-coming-fall-2015-two-new-heroes-and-a-new-map

Q: Will we see Capture the Flag format maps added at a later date?

A: The devs did a lot of experimentation with Capture the Flag, but found that it was problematic with their very ability-based hero design. They gave the example of Tracer, with her Recall ability, who can travel long distances in a very short time. She'd be a great flag carrier, thanks to mobility, but that could come to mean that you had to have Tracer on CTF maps in order to get an advantage, and if you don't use Tracer you're doing it wrong. So, should they disable Tracer's Recall for CTF maps? What about heroes with wall-climbing, like Hanzo, or hover, like Pharah? Should those abilities be disabled too? Should some heroes be banned? They concluded that they didn't want to create maps that caused rules to escalate, so for now, CTF is out.

posted a message on Bastion's new ult?

Just came accross this over-the-shoulder gameplay video of someone (who sucks) playing McCree at PAX on the Gamespot Youtube channel while trying to find videos of the Blizzard GDC presentations:

Now, despite the cringe-worthy play of the guy featured in the video, there is at least one important thing to be noted from this video which, as far as I can tell, no one (not Blizzard, not the multiple fan sites covering Overwatch news) has reported or made updates for. There's a part towards the end of the video (starting at about 4:11) in which our McCree player is mowed down (along with some of his teammates) by this small tank-looking thing firing salvos of explosive cannon-fire that is apparently another player. At first I was like "WTF is that? Pretty sure that's never been shown in preview stuff before." Then, after I re-watched that bit and the mostly out-of-focus kill cam shot afterwards, I realized it's a new ability of Bastion. Not only is it a new ability, but a new transformation mode. This is confirmed by the same rampage being shown in the first-person perspective in the 'play of the game' video at the end of the match, in which you can see him transforming into and out of the tank form.

So yeah... Since we can also see Bastion's Assault and Siege modes being used in the video, one can only conclude that this new tank mode of his has replaced his Remote Mine ult. An interesting development considering that his old ult seemed to complement his heavily defensive playstyle more as it could be used to deter flankers and infiltrators trying to get into the defensive line from sneaking up on a siege-mode Bastion and bypassing his shield or to aid further in defending a point by locking down a choke point or side passage that Bastion or others weren't already watching. I guess this means, after the feedback of Blizzcon, Kaplan and friends decided to give him a more mobile, active, and even offensive ability to round out his kit instead of him being so turtle-y.

The thing I'm left wondering is: where does all this new hardware come from in the transformation animation when he activates this new ability? Everything he uses in his other two modes are apparent on his model, but there are no tank treads, and no big cannon anywhere on him (I guess it could be argued that it's his minigun also transforming somehow to become that cannon, but where are those metal sections that fold over it, then?). Being an artist myself, I personally hate it when animators for games and movies make things transform or deploy and have stuff come from seemingly nowhere or unfold in physically impossible ways (which happens a lot these days), so I hope that the artists on the Overwatch team are considering changing/modifying his base model to accommodate for this new mode (if it sticks around, that is).

posted a message on Chances of Overwatch Heroes appearing in Heroes of the Storm

Yeah, like I said, I would expect some of them as skins only since many of them already overlap with current Heroes characters. But some I could see being unique enough if their Overwatch abilities aren't too much for Heroes, such as Tracer. Then again, blinking as often as she does would probably be op, and if they made it only 1 at a time it would be too similar to Zeratul's blink, so I guess they'd just have to make it short range. Her Recall ability, though, would be awesome to see in Heroes, and if they need more stuff to fill out her kit, she could definitely take on other time manipulation abilities.

I could also see Zenyatta making it in with his interesting buff/debuff and aoe healing abilities. Same goes for Mercy, although I doubt her mass res (or even a single-target res) would make it in. Bastion, as well, could maybe work. Although maybe his duality of mobile and emplaced modes would be too similar to Hammer...

Anyway... with many more heroes in Overwatch to come, I'm sure Blizz can figure out how to get at least a few of them in there. I'm starting to think that they shouldn't have made the logo of HotS that triple-wedge symbol and instead made it 4. Three for the established franchises and a fourth for the stuff that doesn't fit in with those like Overwatch and Blizzard classics such as the Lost Vikings.

They already have. Tychus now has tints of his base skin that have Tracer and Widowmaker on his shoulder armor. Also the Commander Raynor skin is getting updated and the last tint of that will be wearing a reaper t-shirt.

As for the heroes themselves, Blizz has stated multiple times at Blizzcon and after that they are waiting for Overwatch to actually release before they start putting characters from it into Heroes, although they think it would be cool, too.

I personally could see the first foray of Overwatch into the Nexus being skins of heroes already in the game. To, me it would make sense to have Widowmaker be a skin of Nova (her hair and goggles and skin-tight body suit are pretty reminiscent of Nova, I would say) and judging by Sylvanas's ult where she shoots that big piercing arrow, a Hanzo skin on her could maybe work (replace that ult effect with his Dragon Strike, for instance). Gazlowe could have a Torbjorn skin with his turrets changing to Torbjorn ones. Valla could have a Reaper skin where her 1-handed crossbows are replaced by his shotguns (and considering Strafe and Death Blossom are like the same thing, it makes sense) and her Vault could change to look like his Wraith Form or Shadow Step. A Reinhardt skin could work with Diablo since they both have charges and are big and bulky, but not much similarity after that. Maybe they could leverage Reinhardt's ult to be Apocalypse. I could also see Tychus have a Winston skin considering his Tesla Cannon attacks in a cone similar to Overkill and he jumps around while Tychus dashes. Not sure how it would work with Odin though...

posted a message on Your experience on tf2?

I've played TF2 off and on since it went f2p (however many years ago that was) with nearly 1000 hours played... Started out playing demo (because sticky camping is for nubs) and engineer (because sentry camping is also for nubs), but I got bored of all the camping since I usually like to be more aggressive. Now I mostly play pyro (because setting people on fire is hilarious and I love the scorch shot) and soldier (for when our team can't get past the engie emplacements) on regular maps, but I also play a lot of degroot keep and I like to go sniper (so much funner to go huntsman when you don't have to worry about getting shot by the guy you are shooting at before your arrow can even reach them) and demo (for when the class limit prevents me going sniper) on that. At first I mostly liked CP, attack/defense and payload, then for a while I was pretty into the custom modes (especially variations of everyone vs. saxton hale). Now I just mostly do turbine and degroot on a couple servers I like with the occasional 2fort or doublecross for kicks. Never really traded much and I still have a crap ton of refined metal and crates in my backpack. Only stranges I have, I don't use (because even though it'd be nice to keep track, I don't really care how many hundreds of kills I have), and I like to make sure I always have at least 1 of every weapon (except the newest releases), so I'm probably going to have to delete a lot soon or buy extra storage (which I won't). Only ever bought a few cosmetics a long time ago, with nothing since. Right now I just play here and there while I'm waiting for Overwatch since I figure it's the closest thing; but, once Overwatch is out, I'll probably not play TF2 at all anymore except maybe for the holiday events.

They'll maybe do another show match at PAX, but considering how ambiguous they were about the beta date at Blizzcon, I doubt the beta will be any time soon (Blizzard, often when they do a vague timeline for a start date like that, will keep pushing it back internally until it ends up being in the last possible minute of that window) and that means any sort of non-public alpha wouldn't be anytime soon either. If it was going on, considering how good the fan sites are at getting inside info these days, we probably would've heard it from Fluxflashor, by now. I wish I could get my hopes up after this nearly 4 month dry spell of news, but it would probably only lead to disappointment. Right now, all we have confirmed for PAX is a map. I wonder if they are even going to announce one of the 3 un-previewed heroes from the initial lineup.

I came here hoping to hear if this happened to anyone else. I figured someone follows this site could've been one of the lucky few. My friend shared a lot of thoughts with me, but i was hoping to hear more from another angle. For example: He said Widowmaker is extremely OP as her ability to see through walls is constantly coming off CD.

That would probably be because ultimates don't have cooldowns. It should be apparent to anyone who has watched the gameplay trailer that ultimates become available after the meter in the center of the screen is filled up (through damage or other means). I wouldn't be surprised if his other "thoughts" came from watching the official preview stuff like anyone else.

    Quote from Spirit_of_anger »

cannot legally make anything that is a copy of something else that has patents such as TF2

Um... I think you are confusing patents with trademarks. You don't really patent video games. There's nothing really proprietary about them. Maybe you could get a patent on a specific piece of editing software you use to make them (I'm not totally sure how it all works), but that's like saying people can patent a movie. A patent has to be on a newly invented product or process, not an amalgamation of code and art that anyone could put together.

But, back on topic... Jeff Kaplan (the game director of Overwatch) responded to someone asking about the comparisons to TF2 at Blizzcon by saying that he feels honored for it to be compared to TF2 as it is one of his favorite games and he admires and respects the guys who created it. So yeah... if it doesn't bother him, then it shouldn't bother us. That being said, he also stated that if you play it, it becomes apparent pretty quickly that Overwatch's core gameplay mechanics make it distinct from TF2 despite some of the similarities between the art styles and parallels with certain character abilities.

Personally, I think the comparisons will become less and less prevalent, not only as people get to actually play it, but as Blizzard fleshes out the game itself more with more unique heroes and features. Also, while the art styles maybe be similarly colorful and exaggerated/cartoon-ish, I would say Overwatch's is a bit more realistic, a little more detailed, and more manga/comic book inspired. The differences become a lot more apparent when you look at how the characters for each are depicted in 2d concept art and such.

It could be. I doubt they need until April to make a statue like that, so that date is likely a strategic choice. Makes sense to have the related products start shipping at around the same time the beta hype is on full throttle.

    Good find!

Idk... they've taken their sweet time between showing off the proto-type and officially releasing stuff like that before... I would pleasantly surprised, though, if beta was only 4 months away.

Heroes of the Watch (might as well reference Heroes of the Storm since this game has a moba-like system of having many different playable characters with their own sets of abilities)

We're all heroes... except the villains. (because someone needs to point out Blizzard's odd choice of calling their playable characters/classes in Hearthstone, Heroes of the Storm, and Overwatch "heroes" when there are always villains among them.)

The Night's Overwatch (because Game of Thrones is awesome... so why not?)

Enjoying the exhibit. (pretty obvious... statement version of Winston's line from the cinematic)

Ryuu ga waga teki wo kurau! (the romanized version of what Hanzo shouts when he casts his ult, roughly translates to "Dragon, consume my foes!" or 竜が我が敵を喰らう if you want to write it with actual Japanese characters)

20 bucks says the swordsman is actually Hanzo's supposedly dead brother. It's certainly speculation, but there's already evidence pointing to that sort of story hook (when they start fleshing it out with their out-of-game animations and such). If you notice in this picture of Hanamura: http://media.mmo-champion.com/images/news/2014/november/bconOverwatchD036.jpg

there's a picture up on the wall of a blue archer and a green swordsman. The archer is most probably supposed to be Hanzo as he has the icon for Hanzo's Dragonstrike ultimate on his sleeves. As for the swordsman, if you look at the line up picture,

    http://bnetus-a.akamaihd.net/overwatch/static/media/wallpaper/lineup-wide.1z8E7.jpg

you can see what looks like Chinese characters below his chest, but considering that Japanese uses a lot of the same written characters as Chinese and that he's wielding a katana, I'd say it's supposed to be Japanese. Also notice that he has a cloth head band/covering similar to Hanzo's hair tie and similar to the swordsman in the painting. And finally, the fact that he has the green glowing elements on his armor and weapon to make the connection to the green being worn by the swordsman in the painting.

I'm guessing he wears that armor either to keep himself alive after taking that mortal wound from Hanzo, to cover up his identity after supposedly dying (and perhaps the whole thing was faked by Hanzo and his brother to placate the Shimada clan elders), to enhance his abilities, or some combination of all those things... So yeah... wouldn't be surprised if that turns out to be his story.

On a side note, I also wouldn't be surprised (judging by Blizzard's character design that seems to, quite often, draw not just on cultural archetypes, but, quite often, a bit on stereotypes, as well) if that character in the alternate line-up art that you see in the beginning and end of the cinematic with the red, mechanical armor (with the bright yellow elements and white triangle patterns on the shoulders and red, mustache-looking part on the face of his helmet) turns out to be Latino or even just straight-up Mexican.
